CFFI's Inaugural Workshop
November 16th-18th, 2025 in Toronto

This inaugural workshop convened researchers, healthcare professionals, dietitians, patient partners, food industry partners, policymakers, and regulatory experts to strengthen the scientific foundation for fermented foods in Canada. Participants worked collaboratively to build a national research framework.
Integrating clinical and population research, knowledge translation, policy considerations, and regulatory perspectives is the only way to position Canada as a global leader in the understanding and responsible use of fermented foods to support public health.
We are now working on synthesizing the workshop outcomes and will share them with the broader community soon.
A heartfelt thank you again to all who attended and supported us in this important effort. This is just the beginning and we’re excited for what’s next!
Our new publication captures the key insights, challenges, and priorities that emerged from discussions among experts and stakeholders.
We identified critical gaps and opportunities to strengthen the evidence base for fermented foods in Canada, while highlighting priorities for regulatory clarity, knowledge translation, and public engagement.
A FEW KEY TAKEAWAYS:
→ Stronger clinical evidence is needed.
→ Better characterization and harmonization are essential.
→ Mechanisms extend beyond the gut microbiome.
→ Regulatory clarity needs to evolve alongside the science.
→ Knowledge translation is equally important.
This publication is particularly timely as researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, industry, and consumers increasingly seek clearer evidence and guidance around fermented foods.
